How Many Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Sessions Do You Need?

Hyperbaric For Wellness at Capital Health & Iowa HBOT in Des Moines, Iowa

Not everyone who explores hyperbaric oxygen therapy has a specific diagnosis or medical condition. In fact, many people in Des Moines and throughout Iowa contact us at Capital Health & Iowa HBOT with a simple question:

“I’m not seeking hyperbaric oxygen therapy for a specific condition, but I’ve heard HBOT is good for general health and wellness. How many sessions should I do?”

The short answer is: it depends on your goals.

Even for healthy individuals, the benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) are cumulative, meaning results build over time rather than occurring from a single session.

Don’t forget to check out the video at the bottom of this page from our mentor, Dr. Jason Sonners, from HBOTUSA.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Wellness and Optimization

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing air and/or medical-grade oxygen in a pressurized chamber, allowing oxygen to dissolve more readily into the bloodstream. This enhanced oxygen delivery supports cellular health throughout the body, even in individuals without active disease.

At Capital Health in Des Moines, we see growing interest in HBOT for:

  • General wellness and longevity

  • Stress reduction and recovery from daily life

  • Energy optimization

  • Immune system support

  • Cellular and mitochondrial health

  • Stem cell mobilization and tissue repair

Why HBOT Requires Multiple Sessions — Even for Healthy People

Although some benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be felt quickly, meaningful cellular changes require repeated exposure.

Short-term benefits that may occur within the first 1–3 sessions include:

  • Increased cellular energy

  • Temporary boosts in perceived energy levels

  • Improved immune response

  • Enhanced mitochondrial activity

  • Mild reductions in inflammation

However, most people seeking long-term wellness benefits require a structured block of sessions to drive greater changes in cellular signaling, mitochondrial function, and recovery processes.

How Many Hyperbaric Oxygen Sessions Are Recommended for Wellness?

While wellness protocols do not require the same intensity as medical protocols, some structure is still necessary.

Minimum Recommendation

At Capital Health & Iowa HBOT, we generally recommend at least 10 sessions as the absolute minimum to achieve a meaningful cumulative response. (Of course, you are welcome to do one session to simply try out the therapy, but, for observable results, we encourage you to do at least 10 sessions)

Ideally, these sessions should be completed within 3–4 weeks rather than spread over several months.

For example:

  • 3 sessions per week for 2 weeks, then 2 per week for 2 weeks

  • 4 sessions the first week, followed by 3 and 3 over the next two weeks

This approach allows the body to build momentum and create measurable cellular adaptations.

Why Consistency Matters More Than Spacing

If someone asked whether it’s better to do:

  • 12 sessions over 12 consecutive days, or

  • 1 session per month for a year

The answer is 12 consecutive sessions.

HBOT is most effective when sessions are close enough together to create a cumulative effect. Spreading sessions too far apart limits the body’s ability to adapt and reduces the overall benefit.

Maintenance HBOT Programs: What Happens After the Initial Protocol?

Once an initial block of sessions is completed, many patients transition into a maintenance program. There is no single “right” approach, but common wellness strategies include:

Option 1: Ongoing Maintenance

  • 1–2 sessions per week

  • 1–2 sessions per month

This approach helps maintain gains over time with steady reinforcement.

Option 2: Periodic Boost Protocols

  • 10–20 sessions completed over a short time period

  • Repeated 2–3 times per year

Many patients find this approach helpful for achieving noticeable “boosts” in energy, recovery, and overall well-being.

A Personalized Approach to HBOT Wellness in Des Moines

There is currently no definitive research showing which wellness maintenance strategy is best. What matters most is how your body responds.

At Capital Health in Des Moines, Iowa, we work with each patient to:

  • Establish an initial protocol

  • Monitor response and goals

  • Adjust frequency based on results and lifestyle

  • Create a sustainable long-term plan

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for wellness is not about perfection; it’s about finding a rhythm that supports your health consistently over time.
