When preparing for your hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) session, it’s completely normal to wonder what you can (and can’t) bring inside the chamber. Safety is our top priority, and following a few simple guidelines ensures a smooth, relaxing, and effective treatment every time.
At Iowa HBOT, Central Iowa’s Hyperbaric Destination, we want you to feel confident and prepared before your session. Here’s everything you need to know.
Approved Items for Entertainment
Hyperbaric sessions can last up to two hours, so we encourage you to bring quiet, relaxing activities to pass the time comfortably.
Books & Magazines
Reading is a great way to relax and unwind during treatment. Feel free to bring your favorite book or magazine.
Coloring Books & Supplies
Colored pencils, markers, and coloring books are wonderful calming options for both adults and children.
Non-Battery Operated Toys
Stuffed animals, puzzles, and simple toys are perfectly welcome, as long as they do not require batteries.
Other Personal Items
If you’re unsure about something, always check with your hyperbaric technician or our safety director before your session.
Prohibited Items
Because hyperbaric chambers are pressurized vessels and use pressurized air (and medical-grade oxygen delivered via a mask in our hard-sided chamber), safety rules are strict. These environments require careful attention for the safety of our patients and our team.
Fire Hazards
Items that can start a fire will be prohibited in the chamber, including but not limited to:
Lighters
Matches
Cigarettes
Any butane devices
Electronics
Electronics are not allowed inside the chamber, including:
Cell phones
Laptops
Hearing aids
Watches
Batteries
Pacemakers and implants may be cleared by the manufacturer; please inform our staff ahead of time. We will work together to make sure that your batteries have been pressure tested and are safe to be inside a hyperbaric chamber.Â
Beauty Products
To keep the chamber odor-free and safe:
Avoid lotions
Avoid fragrances
No hairsprays, gels, or scented products
It is ideal not to wear lotions, fragrances, or deodorants so the chamber environment remains clean and comfortable for everyone.
How to Prepare for Your Session
To ensure the safest and smoothest experience:
Wear Comfortable Clothing
Choose comfortable clothing suitable for sitting or lying down for up to two hours.
Remove Hearing Aids
Hearing aids must be taken out before entering the chamber.
Why Safety Matters Inside the Chamber
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases oxygen concentration in a pressurized environment. While this promotes healing and recovery, it also increases fire risk if strict protocols are not followed.
Medical Grade Oxygen
Our hard-sided chamber delivers medical-grade oxygen through a mask to maximize therapeutic benefit.
Fire Risk Awareness
Batteries (like those in cell phones) and flammable materials can pose serious risks in a hyperbaric setting.
Strict Safety Protocols
Every rule we follow is designed to protect you, our staff, and every patient receiving treatment.
